Gemma Billington
‘Beyond The Beyond’

Gemma Billington’s main inspiration comes from Nature and its ever changing patterns. She becomes particularly absorbed in the deathlessness and timelessness of Nature; this is intensified by her looking at the eternity of Nature through the ocean and the sky. To the viewer there may appear to be a subject and there is, but there is also something else going on.

Working between England and her mountainside studio in Ireland, Gemma’s work is inspired by the sea and mountainscapes of her home county, Kerry. While the artist draws on the Irish landscape for inspiration, she never takes photos or sketches before she begins working.

Gemma is unconventional in her methods, using only natural materials to mark the canvas. “I paint with my hands and with rags of moth-eaten cashmere. I don’t like the marks that brushes make – you don’t see brush marks in nature, and I try to be as natural as possible”.

Roger Aslin
‘Urban Narratives

The recurrent subject of Roger Aslin’s works is a figure within an urban environment; this is influenced by Aslin’s personal interest in film and television. Paintings are often developed from his observations of city life caught on camera. These are then further explored digitally before being transferred to canvas, board or paper. Sense of space is created using a highly contrasting palette that reduces forms to their key elements, and attempts to distil the essence of each familiar scenario. I am drawn to subjects which allow me to develop this fully, he said during an interview.

Roger Aslin was born in Woking, Surrey. Although not formally trained, he has benefited from working alongside his partner Teresa Lawler who is a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art. Consequently his style has emerged over a period of years. In his art career he is not influenced by any artist but he is aware of and enjoys many different areas of the visual arts.

Hay Hill Gallery also presents a wide sculpture collection of contemporary and modern masters including bronzes of Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin.
