JEFFREY KROLL
artist
return
Jeffrey Kroll was born to an American father and British mother in
New York City, that vital and prime centre of painting’s great
flowering in the post Second World War period. Out of an artistic
family environment he developed his lifelong espousal of painting.
Kroll’s studies began in the Philadelphia College of Art and
continued in Florence and Athens at the museum of archaeology. This
study was the manifestation of his passion for the classical
tradition. His love of world art is anthropological in its scope,
stretching across the millennia of humanity’s aspiration to
creatively interpret in painting and sculpture that which is
spiritually important to mankind. A keen interest in Italy’s
Renaissance artists is matched by the deep influences he absorbed
from the great works since the mid-nineteenth century of Van Gogh,
Picasso, Kandinsky, Klee and Mondrian. Kroll’s expertise is
indisputable, his output phenomenal and exhibitions have been held
in major galleries in Paris (Le Carrousel du Louvre, Musée Louvre),
New York, Los Angeles, Turin, Mexico City and London.
From a formulaic point of
view, the artist’s ‘non-objective’ work clearly demonstrates his
supreme brushwork skill; the layering of colour to develop the
tonalities he seeks to fulfil his ‘subjective’ criteria. We are
subtly pulled into the painter’s imaginative arena, his ‘universal’
spaces and nuanced light sensations. Kroll’s understanding of the
‘mores geometrica’, as Leonardo termed the science of applying
paint to a two dimensional canvas to create a world of appearances
beyond words, pulls the viewer in fact into a four dimensional
reality of moment, movement, depth and space. Kroll applies
both the thickest and very finest layers of paint in a single work
to achieve veil upon veil of subtly reflective worlds of
extraordinary colour that spill themselves dynamically, dramatically
and mysteriously into and out of geometry, beyond frames, taking us
to infinite places of wonder which any curious mind is capable of
imagining. This exciting work, both contemporary and timeless, is a
triumph not only for the painter but for painting in a period when
people are searching for a little awe, inspiration and the magic of
a continually original imagination.
Plato said, nearly two
thousand five hundred years ago: ‘the painter makes a dream for
those who are awake’. In looking at Jeffrey Kroll’s paintings,
here and now, where they belong, we should be awake and ready to
dream.

IMIRAGE: An exhibition of works by Jeffrey
Kroll
Release
Issued by Nokia:
Imirage n a marriage of image and
mirage
SPONSORED BY NOKIA with support from
EPSON.
Opening at the Arndean Gallery in London’s Cork
Street on October 17, Imirage presents a unique, entirely new
artform. Jeffrey Kroll has developed a marriage of mobile phone
photography and painting which is completely without precedent and
takes printmaking in the painterly tradition into the 21st century.
Jeffrey Kroll is known and collected for his
luminous, painterly abstract paintings. He is very much wedded to
paint as a medium, although he began exploiting digital
print technology
several years ago. He started experimenting with a
Nokia camera phone last summer, and has used it to marry two mediums
– the digital photograph
and hand-applied paint, to create truly
extraordinary and groundbreaking paintings.
Jeffrey first paints one of his signature abstract
canvases. He then photographs it using a state of the art Nokia N90
camera phone. The photograph is then printed onto canvas on a
massive scale, using the latest EPSON large-format graphic
printer.
Jeffrey further embellishes and elaborates on the image with paint,
to flesh out the composition. The end result is a subtle and
deceptive interaction of painted space and digital space; a fusion
of monoscopic space from the eye of the camera and stereoscopic
space from the eyes of the painter.
Acclaimed American printmaker, Ken Tyler, who
worked with artists from Lichtenstein to Hockney and has been
recently exhibited at Tate Liverpool and Tate Modern, was quoted
recently in RA Magazine:
'The marriage of new technology and ideas with art
techniques ancient as civilisation itself (i.e. drawing). This is a
dichotomy ideal for fine art printmaking and artistic
collaborations. The art business isn't doing enough to celebrate and
combine the technology of digital imagery with the power of the
human hand. Yet there are great possibilities, maybe even the
greatest artistic opportunities in printmaking lie ahead.'
The completed paintings express profound colour,
translucency and form, works of art that carry the time-honoured
tradition of the etchings and prints into the 21st century, and
transform it.
New York born Kroll is based in California and
Stratford-upon-Avon. His work is widely collected – collectors
include film director Francis Veber and the de Rothschild family as
well as many corporate collections. His paintings have been
described by Tatler as 'extraordinary and beautiful' and by The
Times as 'striking, colourful and rather beautiful.' His work has
been shown in spaces as diverse as the windows of Harrods in
Knightsbridge and the galleries of the Louvre in Paris.
The flagship camera product in Nokia's newly
launched Nokia Nseries range of high
performance multimedia
devices, the new Nokia N90 is set to revolutionize the mobile
photography market. It is the first mobile device to feature
superior Carl Zeiss optics in addition to a range of advanced camera
functions, including a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and 20x
digital zoom, integrated flash,
macro mode for sharp close-ups and high quality video
capture and on device editing.

Jonathan Burns of Wall Candi is proud to announce 'IMIRAGE' — An
exhibition by world famous artist 'Jeffrey Kroll' — "The world’s
first hybrid artworks using mobile phone photography in their
creation."
The following testimonial describes the Artist 'Jeffrey Kroll's'
reasons for collaborating with Jonathan Burns at Wall Candi Ltd.
"When Nokia and Epson decided to support with generous sponsorship
my Imirage project, there was one man I knew I could rely on to
provide vigorous creative input and technical support. Without
Jonathan Burns this project truly could not have been realised at
such at high level of artistry. I have been devoted as a painter
strictly to the painting tradition and its materials, the digital
revolution in printing is a new frontier for me and I needed the
expertise of someone not only deeply versed in the technology but
with the aesthetic discrimination so necessary to an enterprise at
this level..The works speak for themselves..and they are a credit to
Jonathan in his role as printer and advisor."

The sponsors
Another option is to consider
corporate sponsorship. This is difficult without a track record of
exceptional work. But it can be worth trying on the off-chance,
because success can be so very lucrative. Painter Jeffrey Kroll
explains: “Originally I was working with a gallery in LA and I had
this idea of doing a print series, to make my work more affordable.
Epson had just introduced their new 9000 series printer, so I
suggested it to them and they agreed to sponsor a print run to
support the paintings, as they had with a photography exhibition at
the same gallery. Here in the UK, that led to more discussions with
Epson, and eventually the Fonetography exhibition, sponsored by
The Times.” Jeffrey continues: “Through that I had meetings
with Nokia – I presented this idea as a cultural crossover,
important that it was in the painterly tradition. They knew I had a
reputation, so that gave them some security. I think it would be
impossible to have done it without that, although if you go to
something like the Zoo Art Fair, you’ll see a lot of emerging work
getting sponsorship there. This may all sound simple, but I think
anyone who’s serious about art has to get used to a lot of rejection
before something like this works out for them. I’ve been painting
since I was 17, and it took more than 20 years of that to get to
where I am now.”

‘Krollogy’ - Solo show of recent work by leading abstract painter
Jeffrey Kroll, Monday 14th September – Saturday 17th October 2009,
7th – 8th October – Private Views
Thursday, 28 May 2009
‘Krollogy, a solo show of the most recent work by internationally
recognised abstract painter Jeffrey Kroll. Kroll, represented by The
Halcyon Gallery is making a guest artistic appearance at The Hay
Hill Gallery, 23 Cork Street from Monday 14th September until
Saturday 17th October, 2009. With generous support from Nokia, Epson
and The Senecio Press, this exhibition will feature new works in the
intense and dynamic style that has become a hallmark of the artist.
New York born Kroll has exhibited internationally including, The
Louvre, London, where he took over all the windows in Harrods, New
York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Turin and Mexico City. His work is in
many private and corporate collections.
This exhibition comprises 14 works of art including collaborative
pieces with the brilliant young photographer Lorna Buchanan-Jardine.
Also there will be several groundbreaking mixed media pieces that
the artist developed under the patronage of Nokia.
These works have been described by The Times as ‘striking, colourful
and rather beautiful’ and by Tatler as ‘extraordinary and
beautiful’.
Jeffrey Kroll is one of several artists along with Grayson Perry to
be asked to join Lord Coe for the Launch of Artists taking the lead,
the £5.4 million first major project for the London 2012 Cultural
Olympiad.
Kroll works in the abstract non-objective tradition, counting among
his influences Picasso, Paul Klee, Kandinsky, Mondrian and Willem de
Kooning. His works build layers of meaning and colour within an
overarching spatial concept of extraordinary invention and
unexpected nuance; a fluid dimensionality using colour as the
‘supreme metaphysical catalyst’.
“Jeffrey Kroll’s painting leads us into a sure place of wonder; it
is wonder that erases doubt by spontaneously grabbing the heart and
holding it. Kroll’s new body of work, with its finely controlled
handling continues to layer our thinking through abstract imagery.
If, as Plato said, the painter makes a dream for those who are
awake, then in looking at Jeffrey Kroll’s paintings here and now,
where they belong, we should be awake and ready to dream”: comments
Maggi Goren, poet and art historian.
Jeffrey Kroll divides his time between his studios in Santa Monica,
California and Stratford-upon-Avon.
