Biblical Scripture:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he
created him, male and female he created them.”
“The LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the
man [Adam] to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
“… so the LORD God caused the man to fall into
a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and
closed up the space with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he
had taken out of the man, and be brought her to the man.
“The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called “woman” because she was taken out of
man. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his
wife, and they will become one flesh.”
GENESIS 1:27 - 2:24
Description of Sculpture:
Richard presents EVE: a Venus d'Milo-style torso. the first woman
and the first temptress. Here Richard created an original bronze torso in Venus
d'Milo-style. Eve has a texture totally different from the smooth marble-like
gentleness of Bathsheba. The texture deliberately shows the artist's tool marks
with a green antique patina to emulate a Greek archaeological discovery. Here is
a more mature woman, made for child-bearing, the mother of all mankind,
full-breasted with broad hips, round buttocks and heavy thighs proudly flaunting
her voluptuous attributes.
Artist's Interpretation:
“I crafted my EVE from a live
model, working in clay, which I felt was the exact medium to depict the world
s first woman, and the mother of all the world which followed. EVE was our
living link to the Divine Feminine: ‘In Elohim's own image, male and female, did
Elohim create them. (Genesis 1:27). The Bible began with a powerful
acknowledgement of both feminine and masculine aspects of the Divine. Elohim is
a plural noun, Goddess and God together, the feminine and masculine joined to
form the Infinite One. Elohim, called
“God” in English translation,
was thought of as singular and male. EVE's story marks the end of the reign of
the Queen of Heaven and the beginning of the sovereignty of the King of the
Universe.”
