Old Salt 2
Life-Size
Bronze, 46 high x 20 x 20 cm, 2003
18 high x 7.5 x 7.5 inches
Description of Sculpture:
This is a second portrait of Old Salt, modelled in clay from life, but
created two years after Old Salt 1, the larger than life-size portrait,
was finished. This portrait is far more compelling, more impressionistic than
Richard's larger first portrait. It reflects Richard's growing skills and his
continuous exploration to attain different avenues of expression. The special
rust brown patina adds to the craggy lines of this remarkable likeness.
Artist's Interpretation:
“Two years passed since I created the first portrait of Old Salt.
The Old Sailor was two years older. I was also two years older. I wanted to
capture the two-year passage of time in his face. I was also fighting cancer,
and I worked with a different passion because every sculpture I created could
well be my very last. My work reflected my inner conflict of emotions. Somehow,
with cancer hanging over my head, feeling my age and knowing that we were BOTH
two years older, I identified with the Old Sailor. My emotions are projected in
my work. I was sad, but determined, and this is projected in my model s face. If
you put OLD SALT 2 next to OLD SALT 1, you will see the difference: OLD SALT 1
captured his likeness. OLD SALT 2 captured his soul.
I was definitely influenced by Rodin and even
more by his assistant Bourdelle who was an expert in impressionistic
portraiture.”
