Cubic Man
Twice Life-Size
Rust Patina to resemble Wood Carving
Bronze, 62 high x 32 x 32 cm, 2001
24.5 high x 12.5 x 12.5 inches
Description of Sculpture:
Richard has used an entirely different technique to create this
twice-life-size portrait, which is amazingly recognizable and true to life.
Modelled in clay, the artist worked the clay as he would work with stone or
wood. In clay, the artist adds masses. In stone or wood, the artist
cuts away masses. Here, the artist has avoided curves. Everything is squared
off as if carved out of wood. By applying a rust patina, the finished bronze
looks like it has, indeed, been carved out of wood and at first glance the
viewer is convinced that the sculpture is of polished redwood.
Artist will consider commissions for portraits of this size
and technique and can work from photographs.
Artist's Interpretation:
“This was a challenge in discipline. My goal was to create a
man's head, twice actual size, in clay, using a technique one normally reserves
for stone, marble and wood. I wanted everything to be cubistic, breaking all
elements into cubistic planes: The head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, chin, neck. I
figured I could produce a good piece of art, for art's sake, but I also wanted
to produce an instantly recognizable portrait. I hope that you will agree from
the attached photographs of the model that the portrait is fully recognizable. “
“The portrait was produced using a live
model.”
