AUGUSTE RODIN
Study Of Hand
Bronze, 25 cm (9 7/8 inches), conceived in 1885-1910

Is this hand clutching or unfolding? Reaching upwards or pulling something downward?

In this study of a hand, Rodin creates fortuitous ambiguities. We may interpret it in a number of ways and may see its form a complete and self contained or as a fragment. It is an excellent example of Rodin's idea that a detail or single motif may suggest a range of meanings.
